Can there be a place for ‘reason’ in the theology of Martin Luther? It seems not if you consider that he once wrote, “Reason is the devil’s prostitute and can do nothing else but slander and dishonor what God does and says.” On the other hand, Luther was more than happy to include “reason” as one of the gifts that God gives us in his list that explains the benefits of the first article of the Creed in the Small Catechism. As we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation this October, it would be helpful to consider Luther’s insights on reason and its proper role in relation to both the natural world and the Word of God. This talk will consider reason in relation to faith in Medieval theology, Martin Luther’s appropriation and response to these attitudes, and the continuing relevance for Christians today who both desire to remain faithful to the Scriptures and wish to apologetically engage with opponents who defer to rational authorities like science or common sense.

About Pastor Flamme: Brian Flamme is a pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Aurora, Colorado. He has been married to his beautiful wife Jennifer for eight years and they have four boys. Pastor Flamme is currently working on his Masters of Sacred Theology thesis which explores the applicability of various apologetic methods as they relate to Lutheran theology.
