TOPIC: Epigenetics – how your choices can affect your children’s genes and how “truth” changes in science!
Epigenetics has to do with things that are inherited, but NOT directly inherited through our genes. What, you say! I thought that DNA was the ONLY way we could inherit characteristics! Our thinking on this has changed greatly in the last 25 years or so. It is an interesting study of how “scientific truth” can change. Epigenetics is also of real practical importance, because our behavior can affect our children’s genetic inheritance!
SPEAKER: Ralph Seelke
• PhD from University of Minnesota, in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine, in Microbiology.
• Taught Genetics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Immunology for 25 years at UW-Superior.
• Beginning in 2000, developed an active research program in experimental evolution using bacteria to study the capabilities and limitations of evolution when defined as mutation and natural selection.
• One of the authors of Explore Evolution, a supplementary text showing the problems with evolutionary theory.
