Blowing Rocks Preserve is a conservation area maintained by The Nature Conservancy that boasts the longest stretch of limestone shoreline on the Atlantic Coast in the United States. The waters just offshore are one of the best locations on the Florida Atlantic Coast for collecting large and unique shells such as lettered olives, lion’s paws, deer cowries, bittersweet clams, eastern oysters, helmet conchs, scotch bonnets and large moon snails. Participants will be provided with a biblically-based snorkel tour through the area. This field trip is not recommended for young children or novice snorkelers as it may include swimming up to 50 feet off the beach and diving down into waters as deep as 15 feet to collect sea shells. As there can sometimes be a strong tidal current that runs parallel to the shoreline, all participants must be strong swimmers as it may be necessary to swim against this current to return back to the meeting location. This area is also known for its abundance of sport fish. Tarpon, grey snapper, snook and margate all frequent these waters as well as some reef fish such as high hats, angels, wrasses and barracuda. Young children may accompany parents and older siblings and enjoy playing on the beach during the field trip. All participants must bring their own snorkel gear (mask and snorkel) and perforated or mesh shell collecting bags that can be used in the water. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied and supervised by a parent. Food is not allowed at the Preserve so please plan accordingly. There is a public park just 1 mile south of the Preserve where you can eat lunch. Participants will meet in the parking lot at the Hawley Education Center on the west side of Beach Road at Blowing Rocks Preserve (574 South Beach Road, Hobe Sound, FL 33455-2804).
